Top Five Questions About the Peace Process

1. Can the Palestinians form a government or leadership team that includes both Hamas and Fatah?

2. Will Israel take a step back from settlement expansion - including expanding Jewish presence in Arab East Jerusalem?

3. Can donors give hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Gaza without empowering Hamas?

4. Will the Obama administration pick a fight with Israel and win over the next few months?

5. Will planned Palestinian elections freeze the diplomatic process for an additional 6-10 months?

This is an open thread. What do you think?

The real question though is what "peace process"? We should get rid of this "peace process" because in reality there maybe a process but its goal is certainly not "peace" as most of us understand peace. Peace does not mean quiet or no-violence.

I think Obama will pick a fight and win. Or that Israel will pick a fight and lose. And it will be over a settlement issue.
Truth is, Israeli right wing politicians who want some kind of a peace agreement secretly want their own wings clipped a teensy bit by the USA, so that they can be heroes for standing up to Obama and protecting at least a portion of the settlement project.

Historically and currently the political leadership of Israel has ensured the failure of any attempt to limit the expansion of Israel. They will make a false movement or agreement to limit the settlements or vacate them, such as leaving Gaza (as a Warsaw-like prison), while simultaneously expanding in the West Bank.

Mitchell will once again promote the idea of settlement withdrawl and no further expansions. Obama, so far, had show an inclination to endorse this. He has backed the 'two state solution", which netanyahu opposes. There will be behind the scenes negotiations, and maybe the U.S. will place a demand on Israel to back off, but it is political dynamite here in America to oppose Israeli expansionism with force.
